Science Research and Innovation Facility – University of Windsor

Scope: Project Management for the Design-Build of a new Science Research Building
Value: $30.3 million
Location: Windsor, Ontario
Start & Completion: April 2016 – April 2018
Client: University of Windsor

The Government of Canada’s announcement of the Post-Secondary Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) program offered the University the ideal opportunity to commence the transformation of their Essex Hall building with the construction of the Science Research and Innovation Facility (SRIF) Project. The SRIF will be a 46,000-sq. ft., innovative building that provides ultramodern laboratory and collaboration spaces for leading-edge research and commercialization in the fields of Materials Chemistry and Translational Health. The new three-storey SRIF is being constructed adjacent to the existing Essex Hall which currently houses much of the University’s Faculty of Science teaching and research.

The University selected Colliers Project Leaders to provide full project management services for the SRIF Project. Our team collaborated with the University and selected a Design-Build (DB) methodology to provide more certainty that the project would meet the funding requirements We recommended this approach as construction of the foundations could begin as early as possible, while simultaneously the Design-Build Team and the University are finalizing the interior design of the building. This allows us to meet an extremely fast-tracked schedule as required by the SIF funding agreement. The SRIF will house researchers from Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics and Biology in an interactive environment. Additional meeting rooms and laboratories will provide opportunities to strengthen ties between academic research and industrial partners, and commercialize emerging technology. Construction began in March 2017, following the mobilization of the Design-Builder in February. The project is currently on schedule, with a completion date of April 30, 2018.
